WORK began on Thursday on repairs to the Shelley Fountain between West Street and the Bishopric in Horsham.
A spokesman for Horsham District Council said the work was to determine and rectify problems first encountered in late spring 2008.

The spokesman added: "Following the erection of protective fencing around the fountain, a steel lifting beam will be delivered to the site.
"This structure will enable the main body of the fountain to be lifted and major electrical and hydraulic parts of the fountain to be removed for inspection and testing.

"Assuming a satisfactory outcome of the inspection and testing, it is expected that the necessary repairs will take place from January 19.

"It is hoped that the fountain will be recommissioned and fully operational once again by the end of the month.''
