HOLBROOK councillor Christian Mitchell has criticised Horsham Football Club's decision to appeal against the rejection of their plans for a new ground.

Mr Mitchell (Con, Holbrook West) said he was extremely disappointed HFC had decided to appeal the ruling of Horsham District Council's development control committee on Tuesday night (July 1).

What do you make of the decision to appeal?

Leave your comments below.

He said the appeal would be a very costly process for both sides and would leave residents in a state of anxiety and uncertainty over the Holbrook Club site.

He said: "At the planning committee I implored the Football Club to reflect for a while on the decision to reject planning permission so I am astonished that within 24 hours the football club has decided to lodge an appeal against the wishes of over 400 residents and the decision of local councillors.

"The committee is made up of elected councillors, who having listened carefully to both sides of the arguments, concluded that a residential area in Holbrook was not the right place to site a 4,000 capacity football stadium.

"The football club bought the site with no consultation of the local Holbrook councillors and since the purchase did not engage with the community in their plans.

"HFC's plans for a new site at Hillier's were unanimously rejected by local residents only two years ago, and Holbrook residents have taken exactly the same view.

"HFC sold their Queen Street home to housing developers years before finding a new site to move to.

"They bought the Holbrook Club without planning permission and now for a third time they are set to go against the wishes of local residents.

"This is rapidly turning into a Greek tragedy in the history of the Football Club.

"The four local members for Holbrook unanimously agreed, that whilst supporting the good work of the Football Club and its ambassadorial role for the Horsham town, moving to Holbrook was going to mean a massive loss of amenity to local residents and impose such an adverse change to residents in respect of noise, parking and traffic, that rejection was the only option to take.

"This period following rejection of the application was a golden opportunity for Horsham Football Club to work with Horsham District Council to find a more appropriate site, one which is sustainable and served by good road transport links.

"Their decision not to take up that offer will leave residents both angry and dumbfounded.

"I acknowledge that it is the football club's legal right to appeal but my view remains that there is no merit in their application which was poorly put together.

"The decision will now be down to a government planning inspector to decide, which is a very costly process for all sides, but all the while the local residents will continue to suffer anxiety and uncertainty over this site."

I love the suggestion that we should work with the council to find a new home with better transport links.

What does he think we've been doing for the last 20 years? Hornbrook, Hop Oast spring to mind.

The thought of all those anxious residents - well now you know how we've been feeling for 20 years. All we want is a new home and the support of HDC to find one.

If this man's comments weren't so pathetic it might be funny.

Presumably, even though HFC have decided to appeal, doesn't stop HDC coming up with a suitable site. Don't think I'll hold my breath though, as HDC don't seem to have been particularly pro-active in this area in the past when the other suggestions for HFC to move to were not accepted.

Local taxpayer,

More pointless drivel from a local councillor. Now is the time for them to stand up and help the club find a site as has been promised for so many years but never delivered. All talk, no action and no backbone.

Utterly clueless. Why don't these people do a bit of research themselves rather than getting sucked in by the fabricated claims of the local residents.

You would have thought that HFC's plans were to develop a virgin green field where nothing exists at present. We should remember that there is already a facility in Holbrook...the club itself...and anyone who has actually bothered to ask residents in the Queen Street area about disruption, parking, noise and other nuisances would have soon realised that the impact of football matches is pretty insignificant...you'll probably find more noise at the club the next time there is a wedding or a rugby match on the TV.. I think detractors from the plans should put their level-headed thinking caps on and realise that for the sports club to survive it needs to embrace HFC's plans so that the future of the Holbrook Club and football club are preserved for the wider community.

The councillor's comments are naive beyond belief, and are delivered in the hectoring tone of somebody who can't easily accept that others might hold a different view from his own. Not everyone believes the right decision was made on Tuesday night, and, in any case, what on earth did you expect the club to do Mr. Mitchell?

Does anyone not worry what will happen to the Holbrook Club if Horsham FC do NOT get permission granted to build their new home there ?

Surely the football club will see no value in keeping land they cannot utilize ?

So who is likely to purchase the land ? Another sports-related club ? I would doubt this as they would know that they would not stand a chance...so who ?

I would predict it would be a housing company. Some of the land is already possible to have houses on. And with the pressures to build homes in Horsham, I am sure it would not be too long before permission is given to build on the rest.

I for one would rather have a football club, a non-professional, average gate of 450 football club once or twice a week, than 100's of new homes, new families...what will the parking issues be like then ?

What a joke, just like the rest of the council. If it wasn't for the council doing sod all to help us then we wouldn't be in this position in the first place.
