ARMED police were called in when a commuter spotted a man carrying a suspected handgun.

The man boarded the train at East Grinstead before the alarm was raised.

Passengers waiting on the platform were moved to the station car park.
An imitation handgun was retrieved by Sussex police officers.

Chief Supt Nick Wilkinson, who led
the operation, said that no threats had been made to any members of the public.

He added: "Public safety was paramount throughout the operation. Whilst we apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced or whose journey was delayed, I am pleased that we were able to achieve a speedy and a safe resolution to the incident."

A man was arrested in connection with the incident.
