NEARLY 500 jobs will be lost following the decision to close the GlaxoSmithKline manufacturing site at Crawley.

There are 493 GSK employees at Crawley affected by the decision, which is in addition to 160 job losses previously announced at the site.

The Crawley factory was established in 1953 and manufactures a range of prescription medicines.

A statement released this afternoon states: "GSK sincerely regrets the potential impact of this proposal in terms of job losses and will do all it can to help staff through this difficult period.

"As always, GSK will treat employees fairly and the company would provide the appropriate support for those leaving GSK employment. Implementation of this proposal will be subject to consultation with trade union and staff representatives at the Crawley site.

"This process will begin immediately."
