Village’s war casualties recorded in new book

A Pulborough man, who is campaigning for a new village War Memorial garden, has written a book about Pulborough’s war casualties.
Martin Dale, a Pulborough parish councillor, started researching his book ‘Pulborough’s Fallen: The Casualties of Two World Wars’ in April.
He undertook constant research on internet and printed sources, and also at St Mary’s Church in Pulborough and the Stopham Road memorial.
He photographed headstones and memorials to war casualties buried in the churchyard and also looked through the church’s own records.
“I had the idea of writing the book when I outlined my idea for the memorial garden to the parish council. I saw it as way of bringing to life stories behind the names carved on the memorials in the parish,” he explained.
He hopes the proposed memorial garden will be finished in time for the 2014 anniversaries of the First World War (100th anniversary) and the Second World War (75th anniversary).
Martin hopes the book will help other people, particularly amongst his own generation - he is only 22 - to remember and recognise sacrifices made by so many in the fight for freedom and democracy, especially since many casualties were aged between 18 and 25.
He said: “Nearly every village and town in West Sussex suffered casualties during the two world wars. Pulborough was no different. The names of 86 men are engraved into two stone tablets inside St Mary’s Church – a huge number for such a small community. With the village being home to several large families at the time, it is not surprising that several brothers fell together during the wars.”
The book charts the lives and, where possible, the military services of more than 130 men (including one woman and a civilian).
