The life of Hood

The Witty And The Tender Hood offers a programme of words and music about the life and work of poet Thomas Hood at St Mary’s House, Bramber, on Saturday, June 4 at 7.30pm.

House administrator Alan Durden said: “St Mary’s House, Bramber, hosts a welcome revival of Peter Thorogood’s highly-acclaimed presentation, in words and music, of the life and work of the popular Victorian poet, Thomas Hood.

“This fascinating and informative account of the ups and downs of Hood’s turbulent life includes favourite poems read by actors Gwyneth Powell and Alan Leith: I Remember, Faithless Sally Brown, The Dream of Eugene Aram the Murderer, The Song of the Shirt, and other Victorian gems.

“Gwyneth is well known for her role in the long-running BBC TV series, Grange Hill. Her other credits include Heartbeat, The Enigma Files, A Touch of Frost, Father Brown, and Emmerdale. Alan Leith has appeared in major roles including Blood Brothers (The Strand Theatre), Waiting for Godot (Royal National Theatre), Pinter’s The Birthday Party and Shaw’s The Devil’s Disciple.”

The evening is interspersed with musical settings by Gounod, Holst, Parry, Quilter, Peter Thorogood, and Peter Warlock, sung by tenor Neil Jenkins, with Terence Allbright accompanying.
