An insight into the class system still around in 1914. A time when a £5 gift was quite a sum.

“Mrs Ann Dalrymple of the Mayes, Warnham, (widow of Mr Robert Farre Dalrymple, of 26 Park Crescent, N.W.) who died on February 15, aged 88 years, left estate of the gross value of £129,373, of which the nett has personally has been sworn at £120,249.

“Mrs Dalrymple bequeated £40 each to her gardener, W. Kinnaird, and her coachman, Arthur Glass,; £30 each to here butler, William Jane, and her cowman, William Birch; £20 each to her maid, Ada Chalkley, and to her cook, Louise Peters; £10 each to her housemaid, Elizabeth Ferrier, and her gardener, John Wheeler, and her kitchenmaid,; and £5 to her groom, Ernest Jeffries.”
