A brief excerpt from an inquest showing that wells were still well used in Horsham 100 years ago. We have left out any detail in case the family’s descendants still live in the district.

“A sad tale was unfolded at an inquest held by Mr A.W. Rawlinson, deputy coroner for the district, on Wednesday evening, at the Rising Sun beer-house, Pondtail Road, Horsham.

“The scene of the tragedy was a well by the side of No. 14 Pondtail Road, close to the roadway, and the victim a child of four years and three months...

“Since the tragedy the well lid had been padlocked.”
