As well as local and county news, 100 years ago the County Times carried various items of national and international news. This report shows how extreme the Suffragettes were getting.

“While mail bags were being sorted on a train near Selwick Station [Yorkshire] an explosion occurred, and six bags were set alight...

“Guard Barlow stopped the train, and, at great risk, threw the burning bags on the embankment. The outrage was the work of Suffragettes.

“Examination showed that a bottle of sulphuric acid had exploded. A flashlight apparatus was also discovered.”
