There was a range of feelings expressed over sport still being played, while men were fighting for their lives overseas.

“Sir, If football clubs don’t cease their matches in this time of great national emergency, I would suggest that the Civil Guard should occupy the ground and stop the games.

“What will the forces of our overseas Dominions think of the Mother Country if, when they have travelled, some of them, 10,000 miles to fight for us, they find a lot of our able-bodied young men playing football and more of them tamely looking on?

“It is an outrage on the feelings of all decent people that these things should go on at such a time. Gerald Blunt, Springfield Park, Horsham”
