By the number of court cases reported, the police seemed very hot on speeding cars back in 1914.

“Juan Wendez Diaz, of 1 Charing Cross, London, W, was summoned for driving to the danger of the public at Ifield on March 8.

“PC Webster put the speed at 35 miles per hour through the limited speed area, when there was much traffic.

“Corroboration was given. Defendant suggested the speed was about 20 miles per hour.

“He admitted a further summons for failing to produce his licence on demand. Fined £5 and 18s 6d costs on the summons for dangerous driving, the second information being dismissed on payment of 3s 6d costs.
