An interesting follow up to the windmill fire at Southwater.

“Sequel to Cripplegate Mill fire: Horsham Urban District Council clerk reported that Mr Ansell, who lived in the cottage close to Cripplegate Mill, Southwater, claimed £17 for restoring the wall and reinstating the fence, besides £5 for the water used from his pond.

“Mr Mitchell said that the captain of the Fire Brigade told him that they could not get any water without breaking down the fence and that the real effect of the engine was to save Mr Ansell’s house.

“Mr Hunt thought therefore that the claim would be met by the insurance company, though he considered the terms little high, especially the water.”
