With the outbreak of war soldiers ‘absent without leave’ had little chance of not being discovered.
“Thomas Walter Unsworth was charged with being absent without leave from the 3rd Battalion Manchester Regiment stationed at Seaford since Saturday.
“He admitted the offence. P.C. Thomas Towers, stationed at Partridge Green said he saw defendant in uniform at six o’clock on Monday night in the Horsham road.
“He had no pass and said he had been unwell. P.S. Sturtevant said they had telegraphed to the Regiment but had not yet received a reply. Prisoner was remanded to await a military escort. P.C. Towers was granted a reward of 5s.”
