Obviously living in Horsham wasn’t always a pleasant experience!

“Horsham Borough Council - Mr Job Greenfield, of 138 New Street wrote that he had been told by his tenents that the West Sussex County Council were making preparation for manufacturing tarpic in their yard at the back of his houses in New Street for the parish roads.

“Such a thing, he feared, would very much diminish the value of his property, and others also, be a very great nuisance, and drive his tenants out of the houses.

“It had been bad enough the last three or four years when they had had two or three of their coppers going. One heard the women cry out to one another ‘Oh this horrid tar again this morning’.”
