This message home is perhaps more graphic and down-beat than you would expect to be allowed.

“Driver F. Phillips, of the 199th Battery of the RFA, writing to Mr Stedman, Anchor Shades, Horsham, says - It’s bonfire night and I’ll bet we have got a bigger fire than you out here (villages alight).

“Dirty Dick is still floating about; he dropped a shell in the middle of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders the other day and did a lot of damage.

“I’ll bet you have a grand army in Horsham now (wait till they get in the trenches or behind the guns). There isn’t half some slaughter done out here.”
