This brief report among the County Times criminal court news shows that the birch was still used in the Horsham area 100 years ago.

In fact, birching as a punishment was only abolished in 1948.

Apparently in cases such as below the punishment would be carried out by a policeman after a court hearing.

“Ernest Brooker, who had been several times remanded on a charge of larceny was ordered six strokes of the birch.”
