With a much smaller population in 1914, the County Times printed stories such as this one in the knowledge that the people concerned would be well known.

“Much sympathy will be extended to Sergt-Maj H Teague in the loss he has sustained by the death of his wife.

“Mrs Teague, who was 56 years of age, had been ill for some months and five or six weeks ago was operated upon for canncer. in the Horsham Cottage Hospital.

“She passed peacefully away at 96 Clarence Road, at an early hour on Tuesday morning.”
