There was good public support for the local reserve battalion, as this excerpt from the County Times 100 years ago shows.
“Recruting for the 4th Reserve Battalion proceeds apace, thanks to meetings in various parts of the county and perhaps in a measure to the interest taken in the welfare of the young soldiers.
“On Friday the companies mustered at 4.30pm and marched to Slinfold, where tea was kindly provided by Mr W.G. Fladgate.
“There was a capital muster for the Sunday morning parade in the Parish Church. The daily training in Horsham Park, kindly lent by Mrs Hurst, is followed with close attention on the part of the public now that the strength has exceeded 200.”
