Interesting final line in this call for recruits, suggesting the war would be over quicker than it was - a general feeling at the time.

“Dear sir, the 4th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment having volunteered for Foreign Service, application has been made to form a reserve Territorial Battalion to take the place at home of the 4th Battalion should the latter be needed abroad.

“I am, therefore, writing to ask you if you would kindly insert this notice in your paper so that the young men of Horsham and the neighbourhood may consider joining this reserve Regiment.

“They would enlist for a period of four years or until the end of the war, but it is probable that should be over before the end of the their 4 years’ engagement their resignation would be accepted... Charles R.R. Godman Capt.”
