It was a tough life in the Workhouse with some tough people. The sentence was equally tough.

“James Burt, who has a bad record, was charged with refusing to perform his task at the [Horsham] Workhouse.

“Supt Goldring read out the list of convictions, which included drunkeness, using threats &co.. One month’s hard labour.”
