While soldiers were away fighting, there was a strong feeling that ‘back-up’ battalions needed to be created for home duty.

“Mr Claude Lowther M.P. having been authorised to raise a regiment to be called the 9th Special Service Southdown Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment and to enlist both officers and men from the county, an open air meeting was held in the Carfax on Thursday night.

“The Bandstand was utilised and there was a large attendance, including a goodly muster of the Civil Guard... Several men gave in their names.”
