It may seem strange today but the papers 100 years ago would just drop notices such as this in among various other news.

“Major Thomas Philip Godman Dorington, 1st Royal Dragoons, who was killed near Ypres, on November 12 in his 38th year, was gazetted second lieutenent in 1897...

“He was the third son of the late Maj-General R. Temple Godman and of Mrs E. M. Godman, of Highden, Pulborough, and nephew of Mr P.S. Godman, J.P., of Cowfold.”
