Excerpt from an obituary of someone who made a big difference to a famous part of London.

“By the death (at Tower Hill, Horsham) of Mr John Last Sayer the City Corporation loses its oldest commoner and the fish trade of the country one of its most prominent supporters...

“There was a time when Billingsgate had a bad reputation for its language and manners and this stigma to some extent still clung to it, but Deputy Sayer fought it and declared that the district had greatly improved.”
