An excerpt from an article in the County Times which takes readers through the town and mentions a grisly event.
Highways and Byways of Horsham: On the North side of the Carfax is situate the handsome and commodious Post Office and adjoining Club-house.
“Where the Post Office and the Brewery now stand was a goal.
“This goal is noteworthy as the place in which a prisoner was last pressed to death, in England, in 1735.
“The original goal (formerly called the ‘old jail’) stood at the corner of North Street, where it enters the Carfax, from which circumstance this end of the Carfax was formerly and is now, occasionally, called the Gaol Green.”
