A rousing farewell for a local postman at a ‘smoker’ - a term used for a social event.

“At the Bell Inn, at Park Street [Horsham], on Friday, Mr A. Napier presided at a farewell ‘smoker’ when Mr Burgess (Inspector) on behalf of Mr Walter Jupp’s colleagues in the Post Office, presented him with a handsome travelling case, subscribed for by every member of the indoor and outdoor staff, at the same time paying tribute to the good feeling existing between Mr Jupp and his fellow postmen.

“They wished him a prosperous time in his new home. Mr Walter Jupp, who sails for Australia next week, suitably replied.”
