As soon as the war started, appeals began to provide funds for wounded servicement home and abroad.
However, at this early stage there was no indication to the public just how many injured there would be.

By reference to our Public Notice columns it will be seen that donations and subscriptions are appealed for to assist in the organisation of the many Convalescent Homes placed at the disposal of the above named Society, so that they may deal with the sick and wounded of every branch of the service.”
