It seems much of Horsham turned out to watch this spectacle.

“Another patriotic meeting was held on the Carfax on Tuesday night and was of a most enthusiastic character.

“It was preceded by a parade of the Volunteer Civil Guard, now swollen to a number of 300, under the command of Sergt-Maj H.C. Teague.

”The Guard mustered at the Constablulary Yard in Barttelot Road, and headed by the Horsham Recreation Silver Band, marched through East Street, Carfax and London Road to North Parade to meet the Warnham detachment, under Mr Lucas.

“On return to the Carfax the Civil Guard, drawn up in the roadway, was almost lost in the vast throng of people.”
