Hilaire Belloc was one of the Horsham district’s ‘celebrity’ residents in 1914, living in the house that adjoins Shipley Windmill. He was a renowned writer and historian.

“We regret to state that Mrs Hilaire Belloc, the wife of the distinguished author, passed away at King’s Land, Shipley, shortly before midnight on Monday.

“The deceased lady suffered a heart attack at Christmas but was not thought to be in immediate danger.

“Before her marriage in 1896 she was Miss Elodie Agnes, Hogan, of Napa, California. Though not herself a writer, she shared the interest in literature of her husband and of her sister-in-law Mrs Belloc-Lowndes who is known as a novelist and an authority on French history and belles-lettres.

“The funeral took place at the church of Our Lady of Consolation at West Grisntead in the presence of many mourners.”
