Over-zealous landowners clearly were a little too keen to help their employees go to war.

“Sir, It is stated that in some of our County districts certain Landowners, in their zealous efforts at recruiting are using the threat of dismissal to all their unmarried and some of their married employees as the alternative to enlistment.

“In view of a) the confidence felt by all classes in the way the situation has been handled by the Government, b) the Prime Minster’s statement in the House of Commons a few days ago that Conscription is not necessary, and c) Lord Kitchener’s expression yesterday of satisfaction with the present rate of recruitment, is not this action of this employers at least premature, and to be strongly deprecated? Yours, Ex-Volunteer.”
