A telling last line in this letter from the Front.

“Sapper S.E. Hoad, of A. Signal Co. R.E. who is with the First Expeditionary Force writes under date Sept 16 to Mr H. Hull, Crown Hotel, Horsham.

“‘Just a line to let you know that I am still alive and kicking in spite of all hardships. I can tell you we are having a very rought time out here, especially lately; it has done nothing else but rain and we have no tents or any change of clothes, get wet through and then get dry again.

“Of course I cannot tell you where I am or how the War is going, but I don’t think we shall be home for Xmas dinner...”
