The County Times 100 years ago carried various tips and advice for people running a home. This is how to stiffen a blouse - as long as you don’t mind smelling a bit milky!

“To stiffen white silk blouses. Dip them in skim milk, as soon as washed, pass through a wringer, then wrap in a clean towel, and leave for two hours.

“Iron with a warm iron and the blouse will be stiff enough and look as if new.”
