Horsham time concerns - August 1914

World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district
World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

The first shots had been fired in the Great War, but life for many continued as normal.

The point is superbly made in this letter to the County Times.

“Dear sir, Observing that the platform clock at Horsham Railway Station was two minutes slower than my time I enquired and the telegraph officer and the clerk informed me that their clock was right.

“I cycled to the Post Office and found that the outside P.O. clock was exactly as my time, viz, two minutes slower than the station.

“The clerk very kindly rang up for me upon the telephone and their time was confirmed.

“How can I keep the Town Hall clock correct time with two offices declaring theirs to be Greenwich time and yet two minutes difference between the two? Yours sincerely, B.H. Trelfer”
