It seems police 100 years ago certainly needed to know their maths to work out the exact speed of a vehicle!

“Herbert Thomas Smee, of Godstone Court, Surrey, was summoned for exceeding the twenty mile motor limit in Crawley Road, Horsham on June 14th.

“Defendant pleaded guilty through a solicitor. P.S. Walker said he timed the motor over a quarter of a mile (from the Star to the School) and found that the speed was 25 miles 1517 yards per hour. Fined £1, costs 8s 6d.”
