This gives a clear indication of the extent of recruitment in Horsham at the start of the war.

“A few figures will give some idea of the busy time experienced lately at the headquarters of the 4th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment in Park Street, where Col Morse has been in charge, with Serg Griffiths and Colour-Sergt Nye.

“From August 31st to September 7th no fewer than 546 recruits were enrolled. Of these at least 75 per cent joined Lord Kitchener’s Army, the remainder being drafted into the various regular units.

“Within a fortnight 282 enlisted in the ‘Terriers’. Recruiting for the latter closed with August and the 4th Battalion is now 29 over strength.”
