Recruitment meetings were treated as big occasions, with bands playing, in order to build a big crowd.

“Several recruits have come in as a result of the recruiting meeting on November 12th, organised by Major Campbell Fraser, the Recruiting Officer for Lord Kitchener’s Army.

“The Band of the Kensington Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (kindly lent by Col Innes) was a great attraction.

“Subsequently Major Campbell Fraser gave a stirring speech at the Recruiting Offices [Horsham], where a big crowd assembled.”
