Recruiting meetings didn’t let up as the need for as many soldiers as possible was soon realised.

“There was a big crowd in the Carfax on Thursday night, the occasion being a recruiting meeting for the 2nd Southdown Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

“In opening the meeting the chairman spoke of the need of men and pointed to the Huns’ terrible doings in Belgium. as no figure of speech but plan hard fact.”
