Strange to think that 100 years ago the word ‘garage’ was rarely used, hence the quaint description below.

Apparently the word is borrowed form the French (‘place where one docks’) The first use in English was in 1902.

“Mr W.H. Dawson wrote agreeing that the motor-car house erected by him at Homestead, Wimblehurst Road [Horsham], shall be a temporary building and removable within one month of receipt of notice from the Council to remove it.”
