Another first-hand account of front-line fighting from a local man.

“On Thursday Mr A.S. Webber, of the Royal Flying Corps (Naval Wing) was in Horsham and in an interview gave some interesting details of the fighting off Ostend.

“Only a few weeks ago he was in the employ of Rice Bros [Horsham] (in the cycle department) and has quickly got into active service.

“Attached to the Observation Corps directing gun fire for the monitors, Mr Webber says the report of great German losses have been in no way exaggerated. He himself saw a German battery completely destroyed by gun fire.

“He was one of 45 men engaged with balloons, aeroplanes, motor-cars &c.”
