Many parents were to face this situation in the coming years.

“Mr and Mrs E. King, of 42 North Street, have heard nothing further regarding their youngest son, Corporal Cecil H. King, of the 5th Signalling Company of the Royal Engineers who was posted as ‘missing’; since August 26th.

“The probabilities are that he is a prisoner, and it is hoped that he will be heard from soon. He was with the Expeditionary Force in Belgium, and despatched a postcard on August 20th, followed by a letter five days later.”
