Lots of families faced similar worrying times, waiting for news of family and friends.

“On Tuesday Mrs Dale, widow of 8 Market Square, Horsham, received news from London that her son, Lance-Corporal George Dale, of the Coldstream Guards, had been wounded.

“Dale, a single man, aged 24, joined originally for three years and then signed on for four years.

“He was stationed at Aldershot when the war broke out. Mrs Dale has not heard from him since hostilities commenced.”
