World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

This excerpt from a longer story is, as far as we are aware, the first notice of a Horsham district man to be killed in the war.

As we will discover next month, though, he wasn’t the first local man to die in the conflict.

“We regret to state that Mrs Soper, confectioner of 18 Market Square, Horsham, on Tuesday received notification from Winchester of the death of her eldest son at Versailles on September 23rd.

“Rifleman Arthur James Soper, of the 2nd Battalion King’s Royal Rifles, joined the Army seven years ago at Horsham...

“The deceased was a single man aged 25.”
