Fascinating letter pushing for shops to close earlier in the evening.

“Dear Sir, I very pleased to see a ‘resident’s letter’ respecting the unanimous closing of ahops in Horsham.

“It has always seemed to me perfectly absurd to see one half of the shops with shutters up after seven of an evening, and that half grocers and butchers whom one would think would be justified in keeping open a little later than the drapers and boot shops.

“But sir, surely from the assistants’ point of view, does not a draper’s assistant need as much fresh air or recreation as a grocers or a butchers? I should like to see all shops closed at seven o’clock and the assistants enjoying a long walk into the country or a healthy game of cricket, which they are deprived of now.”
