Many people will have read Michael Morpurgo’s book War Horse or seen the film.

The fact is that hundreds of thousands of horses died during the conflict. At the start of the war, though, there was a desperate need to gather as many as possible to ship over the Channel.

“Last evening ten of the Sussex Yeomanry, with an officer, unexpectedly arrived in Horsham, being detailed to fetch thirty horses. They are returning to Brighton today.”
