The Empress of Ireland, mentioned below, was an ocean liner that sank in the Saint Lawrence River following a collision with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad in the early hours of May 29 1914. Of the 1,477 persons on board the ship, 1,012 died.

“The recent disaster - On Tuesday evening the Recreation Silver band gave a performance on the Bandstand in aid the Lord Mayor’s ‘Empress of Ireland’ Disaster Fund.

“About £9 will be cleared after the payment of printing expenses, etc.”
