The well-known writer Hilaire Belloc lived at King’s Land, Shipley.

His wife died earlier in 1914 (reported in our First World War Daily News).

However, more heart-break was waiting in the wings as his son was to die in 1918.

“Mr Hilaire Belloc gave a most interesting and instructive lecture in the Bedford Town Hall on August 31st to an audience of officers and non-comissioned officers. Although his visit was at short notice the hall was crowded.”
