Interesting that this woman was ‘let off’ with a day’s imprisonment.

“May Turner, an elderly woman, of no fixed address, pleaded dguilty to being drunk and incapable in High Street, Ifield, the previous evening.

“P.C. Webster said he found the woman lying helplessly drunk in the doorway, and he had to take her, with assistance, to the Police Station.

“On the way she used filthy language. In her possession was found 9d and 24 packets of lavender.

“Serg Stenning said that on Nov 10th, 1912, the woman was convicted for a like offence under the name of May Ann Harris, and fined 2s 6d. Prisoner strenuously denied this. She was let off with one day’s imprisonment.”
