Regular readers of our World War I news will recognise mr Jury Cramp as Horsham’s foremost temperance supporter. The term ‘brake’ refers to an estate vehicle.

“Handcross: An open-air temperance meeting was held here on Monday evening under the auspices of the Crawley Temperance Society, members of which attended in force by brake, bringing with them music and their banner, which was erected at the juntion of the Brighton and Horsham roads.

“Mr J. Cramp, of Horsham, presided, and after a few introductory words introduced the speaker, Rev Tom Warren, from London.”
