Considering the lack or poor quality of the street lighting in 1914, travelling on a motorbike or car without a light must have been difficult, so it’s surprising the number of people prosecuted for doing so.

“Frederick Henly, of 2 Cornwall House, South Street, Fareham, was summoned for riding a motor cycle at night without a light at Slinfold on 10th March.

“PC Barnes proved the case. Fined 10s and 6d costs.”
