The thunderstorm must have been fierce for the parade to be abandoned.

Friendly Societies grew up during the late 18th and 19th centuries when groups of people joined together and contributed small sums of money for distribution to members in times of sickness, old age and to cover funeral expenses.

“Friendly Societies Church Parade: A prolonged thunderstorm on Sunday morning was accompanied by heavy rain that lasted till after 2.30, the time fixed for the muster of the friendly societies, and this necessitated the abandonment of the parade so far as the east part of the town was concerned.”
