Almost inevitably in time of war some soldiers desert. This man appeared at Horsham Court.

“Thomas Alfred Smith, alia Randall, was charged with being a deserter from the 2nd Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, stationed at Stoughton Barracks, Guildford.

“Supt G. Wakeford said that defendant had a fit in the street on Friday night and friends gave help. He had certain information and found that he was a deserter.

“P.S. Sturtevant gave evidence. Supt Wakeford said Smith had an indifferent character, he had deserted three times from the Engineers and had been tramping the country since Monday, the day he should have rejoined following his leave on the Saturday.”
